(NEWS); The New Strategy of Boy Bands?

The New Strategy of Boy Bands?

Korean music agencies follow a new marketing strategy for their boy groups by letting them promote as units. Thus the individual qualities are in focus and the members have the chance to show off their talents more effectively.

While the Korean music scene in 2010 was dominated by girl groups such as Girls' Generation, 2NE1, T-ara, Kara and more, 2011 will be the year of boy groups as they are ready to make their comeback to the Korean music scene.
Especially the long awaited returns of Big Bang and TVXQ are expected to heat up the scene. Both groups haven't released Korean albums for two years now.

As you probably already noticed, boy groups started off with a new marketing stragey inspired by Japan, "promoting as a unit". Usually boy groups consist of 3 to 6 members. Now this is reduced to 2 members per unit so that each member can show his individual qualities better than when he's in the original group.

The first to do so were Big Bang's G-Dragon and T.O.P, TVXQ's Yunho and Changmin and BEAST's members who started performing in smaller numbers at the end of 2010.
GD&TOP released their debut album on 24th December and TVXQ their album titled "Why (Keep Your Head Down)" on 5th January. on 23rd December, BEAST split into 3 units, the hip-hop duo, the R&B duo and the ballad duo. Yo Seob and Jun Hyung performed their hip-hop track, "Thanks To", Hyun Seung and Gi Kwang their R&B track, "Let It Snow" and DuJun and Dong Woon their ballad track, "When The Door Closes" on Mnet's M! Countdown.

A representative of BEAST's agency, CUBE Entertainment, stated, "When six members perform together, what each individual performer can show is limited." He further commented that it's aa advantage to perform as duos because each member can emphasize his own qualities and reveal more of their talents.

It has been observed that now that YG and SM Entertainment have released duet albums of their artists the interest for boy groups have been increasing in Korea.
