(TV/VARIETY SHOW): TVXQ boys talk about dating on “Quiz to Change the World”

TVXQ’s Changmin revealed that it has been 10 months since he last went on a date.

He appeared with fellow member Yunho on the February 26th episode of MBC’s “Quiz to Change the World“, and elaborated that he was at an age where he’d like to go on dates.

When asked the question, “How long has it been since you last went on a date?“, he replied “It’s been about 10 months“. MC Kim Gura inquired more about his ex-girlfriend and Changmin stated, “I’ve always said this before but I’m at an age where I’d like to date“. He is currently 24 in Korean age.

On the other hand, Yunho stated, “I haven’t dated in 2~3 years. I found myself reacting to (certain things) in movies and dramas. When I find a girl, I want to reenact the scene in ‘A Moment To Remember’ where Jung Woo Sung tells Son Ye Jin, ‘If you drink this, we’re dating’. It looked very romantic“.

On the episode, Yunho also revealed his disappointment at the female cast on “Quiz to Change the World”.

He said, “I’m very disappointed at the noonims (older noonas). When we came on 2 years ago, there weren’t many idol groups so they gave us lots of love and I was very happy at the thought that I was being loved. But after that, they showed love for every idol that came on this show. Their degree of love became higher so I was sad at finding out that they love all the idols in general“.

Lee Kyung Shil, Kim Ji Sun, and Park Mi Sun did their best to comfort Yunho and Changmin. After TVXQ’s dance performance they praised the two highly saying, “I felt the stage was too small for their excellent performance“.

Yunho danced to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” and was exploding with charisma.

He sang and danced to the song, capturing Michael Jackson’s unique vocal style and rhythmic dance, and received praises from the cast. He did everything from the moonwalk to popping, showcasing his untouchable dance skills.

The female stars went crazy after this hot performance, and even the noonims called him “Oppa”. MC Park Mi Sun received warnings from Kim Gura for liking the performance too much giving him a standing ovation.

Check out the hot performance below:

G-Dragon reveals details on Big Bang’s comeback album

Big Bang’s leader, G-Dragon, dropped additional details about the group’s first album in nearly two years and three months, and asked fans to anticipate great changes as well as variety in their work.

In a recent interview with Star News, he revealed that all of their songs were done recording and that the album was in its finalization stages. The singer continued:

“The members of Big Bang have been working on the album very consistently. The overall style of the album is geared towards being public friendly with comfortable music that literally anyone can follow along to.”

I think Big Bang will be able to achieve great things this year due to some of the big changes that have been going on. It’s not only the Big Bang members themselves who have changed – the internal composing staff we’ve been working with has also been completely switched up. Consequently, there will be a lot more collaborations with foreign composers.

But one of the foreign composers isn’t Will.I.Am, who’s currently working with 2NE1 for their U.S. advancement. They’re musicians beyond what anyone’s guess right now. You’ll all be surprised once you listen later, so please look forward to a lot more variety to Big Bang’s image.

As revealed earlier, the group’s comeback album will not feature any solo or duet tracks, and consists of songs with all five members. The album is scheduled for release on February 24th.

Happy Birthday to Kim Jaejoong

Today is the birthday of one of the most popular stars in both K-pop and J-pop, none other than Kim Jaejoong aka Hero of TVXQ / DBSK / Tohoshinki.

Jaejoong was born on January 26, 1986 and turns 25 in Korea (24 in America). He has won numerous “best-looking male” polls in both Korea and Japan and has recently dived into acting by starring in the Telecinema project Heaven’s Postman.

Our friends over at ONETVXQ recently organized an event to have #happybdayjaejoong trending on twitter. It looks like they were successful as #happybdayjaejoong was the top trending topic for nearly an hour:

Happy Birthday to Jaejoong and hopefully 2010 is a good year for him and the rest of TVXQ (as a quintet).

JYJ’s Jaejoong shares homemade video with fans for his birthday

As many of you Cassies know, it’s Jaejoong’s birthday in Korea today!

To commemorate this special day, many of Jaejoong’s fans attended a ‘Hero Festival’ party in his honor on January 23rd. Located in Seoul, the event gave fans the opportunity to mingle and share their love for this handsome star (who’s now 26 years old).

To his fans’ delight, Jaejoong sent in a homemade video of himself exercising his chest muscles. Many entertained devilish thoughts, as they took the exercising of his “chest” muscles in the wrong way…

The video then continued, as it showed an embarrassed Jaejoong telling the audience to not take what he’s saying in the wrong way. Hilariously, he tries to dispel his embarrassment by doing a short exercise routine with his cat, JiJi.

Check out the video (and happy 26th birthday to Jaejoong!)

TVXQ trio denies breaking up

We have previously reported that TVXQ is indeed breaking up, citing a Japanese source. SM Entertainment has denied the claims made by the Japanese article, and now the three members who seek to untie themselves from SME are also denying the claims.

According to Herald Business of Korea, representatives of the three members have stated “We have not heard of plans on the goodbye concert. Nothing is certain yet and we are still carrying on negotiations with the other party.”

Stay tuned to Allkpop as the case develops.

JYJ’s Yoochun gives Jaejoong a unique birthday present

JYJ’s Jaejoong celebrated his 26th birthday on January 26th, and his groupmate Park Yoochun gave him a rather unique birthday present.

Since Jaejoong is a fan of long hairstyles, Yoochun promised him that he would grow his hair until his own birthday. Considering how Yoochun’s birthday is on June 4th, it would mean that his hair would grow unchecked for at least 4 months.

Junsu, who was there for the whole scene, expressed that Yoochun’s present was something he couldn’t bear to see happen. Fortunately, Jaejoong was stated to be very touched and satisfied with his gift.

It’ll definitely be an interesting couple of months, as Yoochun tries to fulfill his promise to Jaejoong. What do you guys think? Would Yoochun look better with longer or shorter hair?

JYJ’s Jaejoong presented with a cake during a news broadcast!

On today’s episode of Cable TV MBN’s Live Today Part 2, JYJ’s Jaejoong was presented with a cake to celebrate his birthday. Jaejoong turned 26 today in Korean age, 25 in American age.

Because this is a rare occurrence on a news show, everyone, including Jaejoong, Yoochun, and Junsu made surprised expressions. Jaejoong blew the candles and said words of thanks while the members clapped and congratulated him on his birthday.

Yoochun said “At the birthday party yesterday we talked a lot and met many people. It’s a birthday that comes every year but I hope it gets more meaningful and happier by year. I hope (Jaejoong) becomes happy.”

JYJ has been through a lot these past years. We all hope JYJ can forget all the bad memories on this day and we wish Jaejoong the happiest 26th birthday!

JYJ trio are guardians of …?

On November 20th, a friend of JYJ’s uploaded cute photos of Micky Yoochun, Hero Jaejoong, and Xiah Junsu posing with a very special prop: an egg.

In the photos, you can see Micky Yoochun smiling while holding the egg up to his face, and Xiah Junsu posing furtively with the egg whilst bundled up under his blanket. Jaejoong, on the other hand, had the egg perched on his shoulder, and looked almost like he wasn’t aware of it.

Xiah Junsu even tweeted, “Oh my egg~!! hahaha.”

Doesn’t it seem like they’re the egg’s triple guardians?

"Have a Micky Christmas EGGrebody!!!!! Kakakakaka"

"Oh My EGG!!!!! Now THIS almost made me hatch!!!!!!! ^^"

"Mr. Egg man has got Jaejoong's back!!! Yo yo yo!!!"

JYJ’s Jaejoong beating Justin Bieber for “Best Celebrity on Twitter” at Shorty Awards

The Shorty Awards, the Twitter equivalent to television’s Golden Globes or Hollywood’s Oscars, is an annual competition to recognize “the best people and organizations on Twitter and social media.” But when the Shorty Awards organizers put together this year’s 3rd annual competition, they probably weren’t expecting such outright dominance by Korean celebrities.

As further evidence (as if we needed any) of K-pop’s global reach, K-pop celebrities are dominating the leaderboard for “Best Celebrity on Twitter“, with JYJ’s Jaejoong (@mjjeje) and Super Junior’s Heechul (@heedictator) taking 1st and 3rd place, respectively. Tween sensation Justin Bieber is ranked 2nd, Jay Park 5th (just beating Selena Gomez, who’s currently 6th), and fellow JYJ members Yoochun and Junsu bringing up the rear at 13th and 14th.

JYJ: Being banned has encouraged us to be creative

In the midst of what can only be put lightly as a mountain of obstacles, JYJ is putting their best foot forward and unintentionally kicking up the music scene yet again.

Now months after the release of their first album, “The Beginning”, and yet only one live performance (at the KBS 2010 Acting Awards), most would not be surprised if the boys were a bit frustrated. However, the reality? They are optimistic, learning, and growing from the challenges.

In a statement released by a JYJ official, the group says: “Because of our lack of freedom to meet our fans through TV, we had to think of different routes to be connected with them. New concepts like our music essay, visiting shows that are not frequented by celebrities, and trying new things have taught us a great deal.”

Working around their effective ban from popular television by using innovative strategies and concepts like their newly released “Music Essay,” JYJ is not only still connecting with fans, but flipping the conventional marketing strategy upside down.

After being released just three days ago on January 24th, JYJ’s “Music Essay” has already sold 150,000 copies and has taken over the #1 spot on the Bestseller’s List- without any of the traditional on-air promotions.

The boys have accredited their unprecedented success to their dedicated fans who stuck with them during their split from SM Entertainment- and each personally thanks them in their new album, which they personally wrote, composed, and directed as a thank you to their fans.

Though we may not see them on TV, it goes to say that we certainly haven’t seen the last of them. With Junsu’s performance in the musical “Tears in Heaven,” an “internet drama” featuring 24 hour music, video, and photo contents of the boys set to launch on March 3rd, and an upcoming eight part series tentatively called, “JYJ’s Real 24 Hours”, on the cable network QTV, the boys and their fans seem to be saying that for JYJ, success is guaranteed ’till “fan-dom come”.

A day in the life of JYJ’s Junsu

Out of the three members in JYJ, Junsu is known as the ‘quiet one’ in the group. In interviews or press conferences, Junsu has always maintained an image of mystery, giving short and sparse answers.

Recently, reporters of Sports Chosun received the opportunity to spend 24 hours in what they called his ‘rare presence’. The star has been juggling a bevy of individual activities (such as rehearsing for his musical, “Tears of Heaven“), in addition to his efforts for JYJ.

In tailing Junsu for 24 hours, the reporters sought to lessen the gap between his true, friendly image and his Hallyu star image.

▶ Kim Junsu enjoys the computer?

Junsu’s day starts at 10:45 AM. The minute he wakes up, he heads over to the Red Carpet Hair Salon, located in Apgujung. He’s been a frequent client of the salon ever since TVXQ began using it in 2004, and is on friendly terms with the stylist and staff members.

No matter where he goes, one could always find the script for “Tears of Heaven” in his hands. Junsu explains, “Sitting on a chair in the salon can sometimes be a waste of precious time, so I try to make use of it lately by reading over my script.

With just a single glance, it’s easy to see that he’s been practicing hard, as the script already looks worn out. Junsu commented, “The script changes often. They said that the script for our next rehearsal changed a lot too. I sometimes sing the wrong lyrics since we have to go through sudden changes when we’ve been practicing something else for days already.”

▶ “Son Ye Jin is really pretty…”

At 1:45 PM, he heads to a restaurant for a late brunch. Judging by his physical appearance alone, you’d think that he’d enjoy a morning coffee with fresh fruits and toast – but as it turns out, his tastes are all Korean.

I’m not picky with what I eat. Potato stew, kimchi stew, and rice noodles are my favorite dishes.”

The restaurant he’s visiting today is ‘Samwoojung‘, which is located in Yeoksam-dong. “This place has the best kimchi stew,” he claims with a thumbs-up. He also ordered an extra side dish of rolled eggs.

At the mention of some of the reporters wanting a nice glass of soju, Junsu declines and explained, “I can’t even put alcohol close to my lips. When I sometimes want to enjoy the atmosphere, I’ll order virgin, gold medalist, or pina colada drinks with no alcohol at the bar.

He also reveals that although he doesn’t enjoy drinking, he’ll pay for the entire meal himself, as his personality just naturally wants to take care of others. “I just think it’s great having fun with everyone.”

One friend of his reveals, “He doesn’t even buy his own clothes, he really spends nothing on himself. But he doesn’t hesitate for even a moment in buying luxury goods for his close friends.” Unlike Jaejoong and Yoochun, who both enjoy shopping at the malls near their dorm in Kangnam, Junsu claims that he detests shopping.

On the topic of flirting, he reveals, “I look at personality. It’s difficult to decide on an ideal woman with just her physical appearance. First of all, I hate women who smoke. Drinking is okay.” There’s an exception, though, as he claims that he’ll eliminate a woman that is too good at drinking.

When I once visited France, I saw little blonde girls calling out ‘papa,’ which I thought was so cute that it even made me dream of interracial marriage. As opposed to physical appearances, I’m more attracted to their speech or actions.

But does he really not look at physical appearance? “The only person I thought was particularly attractive was Son Ye Jin and Han Ye Seul. They both have different charms, since Son Ye Jin is pretty like a puppy, while Han Ye Seul is cute like a cat…”

▶ Ping Pong King Kim Junsu?

After completing his meal at 3:30 PM, he stops by Caffe Bene in Nonhyun-dong for a five-grain latte. He’s only been wearing a thin leather jacket this whole time, and he finally notices the blistering cold as he heads straight back to his office.

The minute he walks inside, he heads over to a ping-pong table and begins to play a match.

Normally an avid fan of soccer and bowling, he claims to have fallen in love with the fun of ping pong. The reporter suggests a death match on the spot, to which Junsu responds by taking off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves for the impending battle of pride.

Throughout the match, he cocks his head to one side while explaining that his spin isn’t working as well as it usually does. “On my last birthday, Jaejoong and Yoochun-hyung bought me a really good ping pong table. They ordered the best no matter what and set it up in the living room after getting rid of the dresser, running machine, and sofa.”

He quickly gets back into the game, and like his title of ‘#1 Ping Pong Player of CJES Entertainment,’ he wins with a score of 21 to 17.

Pictures of JYJ’s Jaejoong playing with his nephew revealed

With all the controversy surrounding JYJ recently, sometimes it’s hard to remember that these boys are family members too. Pictures of Jaejoong posing affectionately with his sister’s child have been circulating on the net ever since scans were uploaded onto an internet community site on January 24th.

The first picture is cutely captioned, “I’m born and already my uncle is Jaejoong~“. The magazine also features an interview with the parents.

Netizens commented, “What a lucky child, so jealous!,” “I’m pretending I’m the child.. pretending..,” and “Why am I jealous of that child?“ Other fans praised the way he handled the child by commenting, “Jaejoong is a good potential father,” and “I can feel his caring father force~”

He certainly looks like he’ll be a great uncle to that child!

JYJ’s reality TV show, ‘JYJ’s Real 24′, to air in February

Cable channel QTV revealed, “The reality program ‘JYJ’s Real 24′ is scheduled to air sometime in mid-February. Members Park Yoochun, Kim Jaejoong, and Kim Junsu will show their every move.

‘JYJ’s Real 24′ will follow the boys as they participate in CF filmings, musicals, and all sorts of other activities. In addition, their secret house will also be shown.

Producer Lee Moon Hyuk from QTV expressed, ‘Lately, JYJ’s mysterious private life has gotten the interest of fans, which has amplified the attention for this program. Even though it was a little awkward for JYJ at first, they quickly adapted to the cameras and had fun during filming.

What could Korean entertainment agencies learn from their Japanese counterparts?

The increasingly contentious ’slave contract’ issue has grown to such proportions that even international companies are sitting up to take notice. After observing the cases of JYJ-SM Entertainment and KARA-DSP Media, many Japanese entertainment agencies have been voicing their confusion over why contract terminations are imploding into such a controversial issue.

Contract terminations are rarely seen in the Japanese music industry. Case-in-point, the idol group SMAP, who debuted back in 1991, are still going strong even after 20 years as one of the most popular groups in the idol industry.

Japanese agency representatives believe that the key ingredient to their idol group’s longevity is the fair and reasonable conditions of the contracts signed. “In TVXQ’s case, the main problem stems from the 13 year contract deal, whereas in Japan, a one or two year contract is the norm,” stated a representative of a magazine company affiliated with five major media companies in Japan.

In other words, the Japanese agencies utilize a system based off personal incentives – if a group attains popularity and earns a solid profit during their contract period, that group will receive a higher salary for the following year. Other methods include enforcing a monthly pay schedule, which in turn allows for less-popular celebrities to pay for their living expenses, and thus strengthen their loyalty with the company.

A special characteristic about Japanese entertainment agencies are the humane relationships shared between the company and their artists. An seasoned representative of Japanese celebrity management companies said, “It’s not about dealing with celebrities as ‘items’; it’s about managing them with an equal understanding and relationship as human beings.”

There was a case back in 2009 when a Japanese actress/model’s contract impressed all those who read its details. “We do not tolerate the emotional and physical pain of labor force,” it said. “Schedules must always be adjusted in order to develop the greatest skills of our models and actresses.”

The CEO of this small agency, Sasaki Masumi, stated, “It’s part of the entertainment business to run into difficulties in managing celebrities as they are our ‘products’, but it’s not just about simply managing a celebrity; I also focus on helping them develop as an actor by instilling in them a deeper knowledge of their craft.”

However, that’s not to say that the Japanese music industry doesn’t see artists leaving their companies due to complications or differences in opinion. Although the majority of artists leave a company because they couldn’t attain as much popularity as they wanted, there are also many cases where the celebrities earn even more fame for leaving a company, like ex-idol actor Masahiro Motoki (2009 Academy Award winner for Okuribio). For JYJ’s case, however, this is the first time a group has been blocked from public music programs by the force of their powerful ex-agency for fleeing the company.

Netizens made comments such as, “The principle of someone becoming a betrayer just because they left after been taken care of doesn’t many any sense. The agency is blocking their activities and making a hindrance… Was it even right for them to take care of them in the first place. I’m a bit skeptical, but they definitely should give back the amount they’ve grown and give them the right of choice” and “I believe there is a lot to learn from these foreign cases.

[Review] ‘Their Rooms’ by JYJ

When Jaejoong, Junsu, and Yoochun – or JYJ – waved goodbye to Dong Bang Shin Ki, I was a little worried, mainly because they no longer had that easy access to the high production value that SM Entertainment provides. As far as audible quality goes, SM spends a ridiculous amount of money to make their artists sound extremely good (don’t quote me on that), and let’s be honest, 95% of the time they do. Not only that, but JYJ were faced with the absence of two key singers – one bass and one tenor, and I mean, what’s a burger without buns? Of course, those two members (Changmin and Yunho) faced a far more challenging road ahead of them without their main vocalists there to fill in the voids. Both ways, the dynamics changed, and it was going to be interesting to hear exactly how they would manage to divvy up their parts. More so in HoMin’s case than JYJ.

But unlike their brethren, JYJ have had the opportunity to expose themselves and gain a little more experience as a three-member ensemble. Last fall, they released “The…” in Japan, and it was the first time we heard JYJ without the other two members (on a recording). As always, they reached #1 on the Oricon charts, and at this point, charting at number one should not come as a surprise to anybody. Rather than going back home to Korea though, they packed their bags and flew to America, where the sound of “The…” was noticeably replaced with a more Americanized style with hopes to break into the US market. JYJ released “The Beginning” in October with the help of American producer/rapper Kanye West and renowned producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins.

To put it lightly, their American foray was messy. Both the marketing and content of the album were way off base from the standards I had held in my mind for JYJ, and I know that if they had a clear plan of attack, things would have gone a little more smoothly. There were two or three songs on “The Beginning” worth salvaging, and okay, it wasn’t the worst thing ever, but one thing was certain: We still didn’t have a clear idea of what kind of sound would be definitive of JYJ.

Now Jaejoong, Junsu, and Yoochun are back in Korea with their latest EP, “Their Rooms“, and I should point out the emphasis on ‘their’, because they basically did everything: composed, wrote, sang, everything.

To say this mini album is impressive just doesn’t cut it. I sincerely forgive them for the mess and a half that was “The Beginning” because “Their Rooms” is exceptionally done, especially for the aforementioned fact that they did everything on it.

Oh, and by the way, I’ve introducing a rating system.

01. “Mission

The first track on “Music Essay” opens the doors wide open to Yoochun whispering, “yeah, brand new JYJ“, and a simple string section playing a mysterious, staccato riff that starts sounding pretty cool once the beat kicks in. Though the lyrics triggered several rounds of laughs (it’s K-pop, what else is new?), I couldn’t help but let myself be engulfed by the pounding beats and catchy chorus. “Mission” isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, but it’s nonetheless an impressive upbeat thriller. It feels very K-pop but without really crossing the lines of gimmicks and tackiness.

4.5/5

02. “Nine

“Nine” is a nice mixture of lush vocals with soaring melodies and a really pretty instrumental. There’s just enough going on for it to not be considered a ‘filler’ track. It also helps if you’re a sucker for good ballads, like myself, especially ones sung by people who were gifted with gorgeous voices. Jaejoong, the head honcho who wrote and composed this, constructed a very engaging chorus that not only sticks, but transmits emotions well beyond the language barriers.

The only glaring place worth revising is the song’s opening lines. Yoochun, buddy, that’s not the right octave.

3.9/5

03. “Pierrot

What a name. “Pierrot” is a mid tempo song chock-full of Junsu singing his head off to the word ‘pierrot’ and words that rhyme with it. He sounds amazing though, and if you’re a fan of his adlibs, you’ll enjoy this song. The break left room for improvement; the instrumental started doing something interesting and then… nothing.

Having said that, there’s a lot of other elements at play that add substance to this piece. Like Yoochun’s pre-chorus line or the spacious instrumental. I’ll be spinning this song a few dozen times this week.

4/5

04. “Fallen Leaves

The thing about this particular number is not so much the song, but JYJ’s interpretation. It’s one thing to hit the right note and another to understand ‘how’ to hit it, and well, JYJ know how to do it like nobody’s business. All three members have moments within this song where they shine and sound absolutely amazing. I mean, the way they ease into the notes and hold them out just a hair melts my insides.

I’m a little iffy about the instrumental on this ballad though. String sections tend to tick me off because they are always over the top and massive-sounding. I think a smaller ensemble would have been a better complement. Imagine a cello/bass line playing through the verses!

*Dies*

That is if they decided to use a real orchestra.

3.9/5

05. “I.D.S.

You want me in your what?! Oh, plans? Phew, I thought Junsu meant something a little more… lewd. “I.D.S.” is the only song so far that features auto-tune, but it’s scarcely used, so no worries. It’s in here more for effect rather than fixing any bad singing. It’s JYJ; bad singing does not exist. The synths sound vaguely familiar, but I just can’t put my finger on it.

Overall, the song is pretty simple, with the exception of the middle 8, which is the most gorgeous thing ever. Then it goes back to the same hypnotizing rhythm.

3.5/5

06. “Untitled Song Part 1

This song will impact listeners, if you know the lyrics, in ways that don’t really apply to me. I’m not going to get into the content of the words, but it is pretty clear that Yoochun’s rap is rooted in a particular emotion that seems to smear right over the lyrics. While the rap is somewhat passive-aggresive, the soft beat and added vocals serve as a really powerful complement.

3.9/5

-

For a mini-album in K-pop, this is perfectly paced and brilliantly composed. Not a single song falls short or gets lost among the others. From one song to the next, there’s a strong sense of cohesion and it feels like the perfect amount of songs with just the right amount of energy in each. JYJ has proven that they don’t need the luxury of a high brow agency to produce amazing work, and actually, the fact that their sound isn’t at all like it was under DBSK helps it remains refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable.

Overall Rating: 4.7/5

JYJ’s Jaejoong sends a text message to TVXQ’s Yunho

Ever since TVXQ’s Yunho stated that he did not receive any sort of contact from JYJ’s Jaejoong at his press conference yesterday, fans have been furiously debating as to whether his claim was true.

Prior to the response, Jaejoong had stated in an interview, “Personally, I tried to contact Yunho and Changmin, but they did not pick up. I tried to meet them on my own through an associate, but that didn’t go as planned.

Yesterday, Yunho was asked whether he received any contact from Jaejoong, to which he replied, “That’s not true. We’ve never received contact. And even if we want to contact them, their numbers have changed, so we might not have accepted the call because of the unfamiliar number. There’s been a lot of prank calls lately, it’s difficult for us to take every call.

On the morning of January 13th, Jaejoong wrote on his Twitter, “I want to reply to this directly, through my own words. They weren’t many, but do you know how hard it was for me to send you those texts? I texted you again right now, please check it.”

Fans have speculated the tweet was a response to Yunho’s press conference statement, and are anxiously waiting for a response.

JYJ talks about Yunho and Changmin, Japan, and changes

Ever since the announcement of JYJ splitting from SM Entertainment on July 31, 2009, both the members of TVXQ and their fans have been riding a long roller coaster with numerous ups and downs along the way. After revealing their new album, ‘The Beginning’, last October, the JYJ trio has become increasingly confident about expressing the thoughts they’ve kept to themselves this past year.

- You won the Golden Disk Awards twice in your careers (2006, 2008), did you watch this year’s awards show?

“We watched it. It made us reminisce about our past, as well as feel new emotions. It’s already been two years since we stood up on that stage. We’ve carefully stored away our Golden Disk platinum medal.” (Yoochun)

- We’ve heard that Hero Jaejoong is popular amongst Japanese female celebrities. There were even rumors about him being in a relationship with one.

“All those articles about relationships are just fiction. It’s true that I get along with the Japanese female stars, but there isn’t one that I’m in a relationship with. Japan is different from Korea in that their celebrities all comfortably get along privately. I’m close with Hamasaki Ayumi, which is probably where the relationship rumors came from.” (Jaejoong)

“Jaejoong has everything Japanese girls like about guys. He has cute and sexy charms all in one body. But in real life, he doesn’t have a girlfriend.” (Yoochun)

- Korean artists seem to be popular in Japan.

“The status of Korean artists in Japan have increased to their advantage. Korean singers are becoming acknowledged for their dancing, singing, and looks. It’s not just their skills, but they also admire Korean males for their nice bodies and being able to drink alcohol well.” (Jaejoong)

- You’ve worked so hard in Japan for how many years, but you’re unable to promote.

“We predicted that there would be difficulties along the way. We’re just thankful that we were able to even release an English album. We’re disappointed, but all we’re hoping for is to get everything solved so we can meet our fans again.” (Junsu)

- What warranted you to withdraw from the team, even when you knew it would be hard? You knew there would be a possibility of people pointing at you for betrayal.

“Up until we made our decision, we lived in chaos for over a year. At the time, there were a lot of speculations regarding business and revenue shares, but we only have one answer. We thought about how we would answer ourselves if we were to ask, “Were we really happy?”, later in life. From the moment we realized we would answer, “I don’t think so”, there was no point of us hesitating any longer. We are sorry for everyone who supported us and helped us, but we put down the decision that we couldn’t do this to our own lives anymore.” (Junsu)

- But it wouldn’t have been easy to make that decision at the peak of your careers.

“We were prepared to face the possibility of not being able to be sing again. If we weren’t prepared to that extent, we wouldn’t have had enough courage to make that decision. We even thought of going to the countryside to build and live on a farm. We also thought this would turn into a 10 year long fight.” (Junsu)

“It’s true. We all knew our celebrity lives could end. We didn’t even have hope of doing well. I thought of selling my house in Seoul to live in the countryside.” (Yoochun)

- There are a lot of mountains you must get over, like not being able to go on broadcast.

“Even though we get criticized a lot at the beginning, doesn’t it get better later on? It’s hard when problems keep surfacing, but we’re learning how to win over them. When something bad explodes, I turn off my internet and don’t even read articles. Even though it’s a bad situation, we try to be positive. Being pessimistic just because we’re sad makes the people around us even more stressed. That’s why I write up fun messages on my Twitter and try to communicate with our fans.” (Jaejoong)

- Do you still keep in contact with SM’s Yunho and Changmin?

“We’re really sad that we can’t. We’re not saying that just because we left the company it means we left the members too… We watched their album teaser for the January comeback. We honestly hope they will do well.” (Jaejoong)

- You three members must have become more independent.

“We didn’t have a lot of time together because of our busy schedules, but after our concert last month, us three went on a nationwide trip. We traveled from Kangwon-do to Busan in two weeks. We rode yachts and went to find the nation’s best restaurants. We found out that Junsu has a lot of popularity in the countryside.” (Yoochun)

- When does TVXQ shine the most?

“We hope we can shine even more when the five of us are together. We’re open to the idea, although we’re not sure when that will happen…” (Yoochun)

- Do you have any special plans for Christmas?

“None of us have girlfriends… I think us three will be getting together for some soju.”

Avex dropped JYJ because of SNSD?

On September 27th, a news article by Japan’s Asahi News, titled, “TVXQ’s comeback potential“, speculated that Avex dropped promotional activities with JYJ because their contract with JYJ hindered Avex’s recruitment of other Korean stars. The article specified that Avex supported JYJ, but this caused a breakdown in relations between Avex and SM Entertainment to the point where the latter signed SNSD with Universal.

In summary, Aera, the author of the article, postulates that Avex split with JYJ as an act of submission to SM Entertainment and other Korean entertainment corporations.

Aera wrote, “It is commonly accepted in Korea that companies spend millions to train and promote artists from their early childhood. Korea’s entertainment business finds it inevitable that contracts must be of a certain length to guarantee profit. JYJ’s split from SM through legal proceedings put a huge scratch on the face of SM and Korea’s business. When Avex salvaged JYJ, it was a direct confrontation with SM.

When SNSD and KARA signed under Universal, and 2PM followed up with Sony, Avex had to consider the lack of fresh Korean recruitment. In the end, they opted to drop the immediately, but minimally profitable, JYJ for a chance to sign the new generation’s ‘TVXQ’.”

Aera continued, “Just like in Korea, where fame is but an overinflated bubble, when TVXQ broke up, their fame took a massive hit. Even in Japan, JYJ’s activities drew negatives comments such as, ‘money hungry dogs’, and other severe criticisms“.

Aera concluded by questioning whether JYJ has a bright future ahead.

SME responds to debate over TVXQ’s “Keep Your Head Down” lyrics being a message for JYJ

TVXQ’s lyrics for their comeback track, “Keep Your Head Down,” has been the topic of hot debate amongst fans lately, with many speculating that it’s an indirect message for JYJ.

The lyrics, “I’ll erase everything of you inside of me and set out for a brighter future. Someday, you’ll realize just how genuine the love you threw away was,” are at the center of the debate, and many have been connecting it to JYJ, who is currently under dispute with SM Entertainment.

SM Entertainment responded to the speculations on the morning of January 3rd. The company stated, “First of all, please listen to TVXQ’s improved skills in their song before you make a judgment. The song is an expression of love and heartbreak between two lovers.”

<”Keep Your Head Down” Lyrics>

Keep your head down U-Know time (Max)
You know what time it is?
This is return of the king

(Everything has ended) I didn’t even start yet
(We broke up) I haven’t even heard the reason yet
Everyone around me keeps asking me why I’m like this
Why are you like that, why are you like that? I’m already the bad guy

(If it’s a sin) If loving you was a sin
(If that was a shin) If being genuine is a sin
(I’ll keep it low, I’ll keep it low) I’ll hold it in and stand my ground

(Keep your head down)
You look pretty, but inside you’re so different, that’s what I’m afraid of
(Keep your head down)
I said I loved you but I’ll let you go

(Why?) Did you leave me so easily
(Why?) Did I look easy to you?
(Why?) My heart is ripping to shreds
(Why?) If every moment was a dream
(Why?) If only I had the time to set it right
(Why?) I prayed for your happiness

I was always satisfied with having you
I was happy to dream the same dream as you no matter what they said
I had to let you go, but I’m just walking my path anyway
Now I’m just chillin’, Feel like I’m healing

It’s too late, you said you can’t come back
You’ve always believed that I’d crumble without you
That’s a misunderstanding, why would I do that? why, why, I told you I wouldn’t

(Hey) I was really, really sad, because you were so immature
and I was afraid you’d meet someone bad (Why? baby)

(Keep your head down)
You’re really pretty, but that’s all there is to you, there’s nothing important inside of you
(Keep your head down)
A nail is driven into the heart that is holding in the pain of love

(Why?) Why
(Why?) You let go of our love so easily
(Why?) Did you ever think that someone would get worried?
(Why?) I don’t think you know yet
(Why?) Exactly just what you let go of
(Why?) Just remain there and watch me grow

Ha~ Don’t play with people like that
In front of me, all you do is speak of lies
You’re such a two-faced person
(Why why why) Since when did our crystal-like feelings become so opaque?

Our love has ended, I’ve let you go, and now my heart is empty
But my future is gesturing towards me to get up and smile
I’m letting you go, live happily (why why why)
One day far from now, far from now, I want to just smile comfortably

(Why?) Why
(Why?) You let go of our love so easily
(Why?) Did you ever think that someone would get worried?
(Why?) I don’t think you know yet
(Why?) Exactly just what you let go of
(Why?) Just remain there and watch me grow

(Keep your head down)
Erased, disappeared, you’ve burned to death in my heart
(Keep your head down)
Erased, disappeared, you’ve died in my heart and you no longer exist

[UPDATES] TVXQ expresses their thoughts about their comeback and JYJ

Worldwide Daily News and National Daily News recently met with the TVXQ members, Yunho (25) and Changmin (23), on January 11th at the SM Entertainment-managed ‘EverySing Karaoke’ event in Seoul. The duo shared their thoughts on their long-awaited comeback, their musical concept, and the strained relationship they hold with JYJ.

Yunho expressed, “I’m thankful to all the fans who waited for us. My condition wasn’t up to par for our broadcasts last week, but seeing our fans passionately supporting us gave me overflowing strength.”

He continued, “Musically, we kept with the same colors of TVXQ. We exploited of all our strong points to the best of our ability by assigning Changmin to the higher notes while I took the bass, all the while putting great focus on our performance. We were worried that our polar opposite voices might not match, but we ended up with a good result and a new color.”

Changmin stated, “We made some changes along with the member adjustments. If we put emphasis on a lot of us singing the chorus in harmony before, then this time, we’ve changed so that our music can keep both keep of our vocals alive; we’ve also changed our methods in expressing our emotions for the song.”

When asked about their reason behind performing a ballad song, “How Can I”, for their first comeback stage, Yunho answered, “We sang it because we thought it would have a mass public appeal. We wanted to approach the fans with a variety of genres by throwing out our ‘TVXQ: the dance group’ image.”

With regards to the new album concept, “It’s music with a middle-ground between our personalities and our harmonization. We tried our best in filling up the space of the withdrawn members, and we focused on masculine and dynamic choreography.”

TVXQ is a team that was created by SM. Whatever their motive was for withdrawing from the group, we waited for them solve their problems with the company and come back to us.

Changmin expressed, “We thought we needed to protect TVXQ’s name. When a swarm of geese prepare to migrate, they never forget to make the correct formation. I don’t think it’s right when a few of the geese who chose to broke away still considered themselves as part of the flock.”

With JYJ being unable to make appearances on TV shows and broadcasts, there have recently been an influx of speculations regarding the situation between TVXQ and JYJ. TVXQ expressed, “It’s not like our hearts are comfortable about this either. We are suffering difficulties, we just feel it’s more appropriate if we don’t say it.”

When asked whether the meanings of ‘betrayal’ and ‘regret’ in their “Keep Your Head Down” track was aimed towards the absent members, Yunho replied, “When you listen to the song, it is possible to think the song is talking about them, considering the similar situations. However each person’s interpretation of the song is different, and it’s only about a man who is sending away his previous love.”

Yunho also added, “In my darkest moments, I thought about TVXQ being forgotten. It’s true that we’re becoming more distant with those friends. We needed to solve this inner grudge but we hadn’t been in contact for such a long time, and as a leader of a group for 8 years, it hurt a lot.”

“When I was depressed, I rode the subway and wandered the streets by myself, and I learned a lot from it. I even went mountain climbing, and just like how I had to go through a difficult path to get to the top of the mountain, I also believe that this was an important time for TVXQ in order to get back on the right track.”

He continued, “We will definitely show why we’re TVXQ through our music. We will do our best in not being a disappointment to anyone.”

Changmin added, “We’re also aware of those who look at TVXQ in a negative light. Going on stage and using our fans’ support to wipe out those criticisms is our responsibility. We’ve come back prepared to take on that responsibility.”
